Bermuda Braces for Hurricane Ernesto: Forecasted 100 mph Winds and Life-Threatening Flooding

Hurricane Ernesto is a category 2 storm that is expected to bring life-threatening floods, storm surges, and 100 mph winds to Bermuda in the next 24 hours. The island is under a hurricane warning, with as much as 15 inches of rain expected. Hurricane-strength winds are expected to extend 70 miles from the storm’s center, while tropical storm-force winds will be felt 265 miles away. Residents are urged to complete preparations to protect life and property.

The center of the storm is forecasted to pass over or near Bermuda on Saturday, with the possibility of some strengthening before that. Ernesto is expected to remain a large hurricane and maintain its strength over the weekend. The storm is also expected to cause significant coastal flooding in areas of onshore winds and large destructive waves.

The effects of Hurricane Ernesto will also be felt in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Bahamas, and potentially on the U.S. East Coast, causing life-threatening surf and rip currents. Beach-goers are advised to stay out of the water if advised by lifeguards. The storm has already caused power outages in Puerto Rico and is on track to move north and pass east of Newfoundland on Monday.
