Fighters from Sudan’s paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), attacked the village of Galgani in the central province of Sennar, looting, burning, and killing at least 85 people, including women and children. The attack began in July and escalated last week when RSF fighters opened fire on unarmed residents after they resisted attempts to abduct and sexually assault women and girls.
Reports indicate that more than 150 villagers were wounded in the attack. The RSF has been accused of massacres, rapes, and other gross violations across the country since the conflict began in April last year. The conflict between the military and the RSF erupted into open fighting in the capital Khartoum and other areas.
The attack on Galgani involved hundreds of RSF fighters storming the village in pickup trucks with heavy weapons, looting and burning houses and public properties. Dozens of bodies, including women and minors, were found by the local medical center. This attack is just one of many atrocities committed by the RSF in the ongoing conflict.
International efforts led by the United States have been made to resume peace talks between the military and the RSF, which began last week in Switzerland. The conflict has led to a devastating humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced and the country on the brink of famine. Atrocities including mass rape and ethnically motivated killings have been reported, leading to calls for accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
