Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces now control 92 settlements in Russia’s Kursk region, covering over 1,250 square kilometers. This includes the capture of a large number of Russian prisoners in a single operation, aimed at freeing Ukrainians from Russian captivity. Zelenskyy emphasized that their active defensive actions have proven effective in countering Russian aggression.
The Russian authorities have reported the evacuation of over 121,000 people from the Kursk region, with 84 temporary accommodation centers set up to accommodate those displaced. Ukraine’s goal is to create a “buffer zone” to prevent further attacks by Moscow along the border. Zelenskyy stated that if their partners lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons on Russian territory, there would be no need for physical incursions into the Kursk region to protect Ukrainian citizens.
The military incursion into Russia’s territory began on 6th August, with Zelenskyy’s announcement marking the first time the operation’s objective was clearly stated. The captured Russian prisoners may be part of a future exchange. This operation has been described as Ukraine’s most significant effort in countering Russian aggression, with Zelenskyy highlighting the effectiveness of their proactive and preventive defense measures. Russian state television has shown images of temporary accommodation centers, with the evacuation process ongoing.
