In the midst of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO members Romania and Latvia have reported incursions by Russian drones into their airspace. Romania confirmed a Russian drone entered its airspace during nighttime attacks near the Danube River, while Latvia said a drone crashed in the eastern part of the country. Both countries strongly condemned the violations, with Romania deploying F-16 fighter jets to monitor its airspace. NATO’s Mircea Geoana condemned Russia’s actions as irresponsible and potentially dangerous. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister called on allies for concrete action, including intercepting Russian missiles and drones, providing military aid, and lifting weapon restrictions. Poland has also reported violations of its airspace by Russian drones. In response, Romanian lawmakers are considering allowing the shooting down of drones in peacetime. These incidents highlight the growing tensions and threats posed by Russia’s actions beyond Ukraine’s borders.
