President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has announced billions in aid for Central European countries impacted by severe flooding. Visiting a flood-damaged region in Poland, von der Leyen pledged swift funds from the EU’s solidarity fund as well as an additional 10 billion euros for urgent repairs. No contribution from individual countries will be required for the money to be released, a departure from the usual requirement for co-financing. The EU chief emphasized the need for extraordinary measures in light of the extensive destruction caused by the floods. The announcement comes after von der Leyen met with government heads from Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, all of which have been heavily affected by the floods. The President of the European Commission described the devastation as “heart-breaking” and stressed the importance of swift action in the face of such a crisis. Homes have been destroyed and lives lost across the region as a result of the flooding. The aid package aims to support affected countries in their recovery efforts and provide much-needed assistance during this challenging time. Von der Leyen made the announcement in Wroclaw, Poland, where she witnessed firsthand the destruction caused by the floods.
