Iranian hackers have been accused of sending stolen material from Republican former President Donald Trump’s campaign to individuals involved in Democratic President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, according to US agencies. The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a joint statement alleging that malicious cyber actors from Iran have been attempting to undermine confidence in the US electoral process. While there is no evidence that the recipients responded to the emails, the agencies did not provide details on the nature of the stolen material. Iran has denied interfering in US affairs, calling the allegations unfounded. Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, accused Iran of trying to influence the election to benefit Biden and Harris, suggesting they come clean on any use of hacked material. However, a spokesperson for Harris’s campaign stated they were not aware of any material being sent directly to them, with only a few individuals receiving suspicious emails on personal accounts. The former president claimed that Iran’s actions amounted to foreign election interference, while Tehran has accused the US of interfering in its affairs for decades. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about cybersecurity and foreign influence in US elections, with both campaigns calling for transparency and accountability.
