FBI agents and sheriff’s deputies responded to businesses near Trump International Golf Club in Florida shortly after a Secret Service agent fired at a suspected would-be assassin, Ryan Wesley Routh. Routh was waiting for former President Donald Trump with a semi-automatic rifle. He is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and remains in custody. Businesses near the golf course were visited by law enforcement to seize surveillance video of Routh leaving the scene. The FBI is investigating the incident as an assassination attempt and is working on developing a timeline of Routh’s actions before and after the shooting. The FBI typically takes possession of electronic media to preserve metadata for court testimony. Routh’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 23. The FBI and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. Video and witness interviews are being used to determine a motive and gather more information about Routh’s actions. Law enforcement experts believe this evidence can help identify who Routh may have been in contact with and what his motives were. The FBI is leading the investigation and has not yet made any statements about their findings.
