Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, was charged with felony murder and unlawful imprisonment after posing as a utility worker to gain entry to a Michigan house and murdering a man in a “gruesome” attack, while tying up his wife. Hernandez and another man were caught on doorbell camera footage claiming to be from a local energy company and were wearing masks, yellow vests, fake ID badges, and had a phony work order. Hernandez was arrested in Louisiana, with a warrant for his arrest in Ohio in connection with an alleged armed robbery. The man who was killed was named Hussein Murray, 72, and his family expressed heartbreak over his death. Murray’s wife was also tied up during the attack but was able to call 911 after the suspects fled. Investigators believe the suspects targeted the house due to prior knowledge of valuables or money. DTE Energy warned residents to always ask for photo ID before allowing workers into their homes. Felony Murder is punishable by life without parole and unlawful imprisonment carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. Prosecutors have authorized the highest charges for this brutal crime, with a mandatory life without parole sentence. A manhunt is ongoing for the second unidentified suspect involved in the attack.
