The extended family of Erik and Lyle Menendez are gathering outside a Los Angeles courthouse where the district attorney is reviewing whether the brothers, who were found guilty of killing their parents almost three decades ago, should be resentenced and possibly released. Nearly two dozen family members, their defense lawyer Mark Geragos, and celebrity advocate Rosie O’Donnell will hold a news conference to address the situation. The brothers were convicted in 1989 for the murders of José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez and have been serving life in prison without parole. The case garnered national attention and recently gained renewed interest with the release of a Netflix miniseries and documentary that explore the abuse the brothers claim to have suffered at the hands of their father. Despite their defense of acting out of fear and trauma, the prosecution argued they killed their parents for money. The family members speaking at the news conference include relatives of both parents. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian have also advocated for the brothers’ release, citing unfair treatment in the legal system. District Attorney Gascón, known for his reformist platform, stated that only four out of over 300 resentenced individuals have reoffended under his term. The decision regarding the Menendez brothers’ resentencing will ultimately be made in court, despite public opinion support.
