In response to Elon Musk’s controversial leadership and the toxic environment on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, a number of liberal-leaning celebrities and public figures have decided to migrate to alternative platforms. Lizzo, Quinta Brunson, and Jamie Lee Curtis are among those who have left X for greener pastures, with many opting for Bluesky or Meta’s Threads.
Lizzo directed fans to her Bluesky account, Curtis deactivated her X account with a poignant message, and Brunson indicated she would be more active on Bluesky in the future. Other notable figures joining the exodus include Ben Stiller, Yvette Nicole Brown, Flavor Flav, Barbra Streisand, Guillermo del Toro, Kumail Nanjiani, and Dionne Warwick.
The Guardian newspaper has also decided to stop posting on X, citing the platform’s promotion of disturbing content, far-right conspiracy theories, and racism. The outlet criticized Elon Musk’s ability to shape political discourse through his ownership of the platform.
As more celebrities and media outlets make the switch to alternative platforms in response to the issues on X, it remains to be seen how this will impact the future of social media and online discourse. The move to platforms like Bluesky may signal a shift in how public figures and influencers engage with their audiences in a more positive and inclusive online environment.
