HHS to Close or Scale Back Multiple Health Agencies, Including CDC

The Department of Health and Human Services is planning to cut 10,000 full-time jobs across its agencies as part of the Trump administration’s plans to restructure the federal government. This reduction in force plan is expected to lead to the closure or downsizing of multiple departments at agencies like the CDC, potentially impacting public health efforts. HHS oversees 13 agencies, including the CDC, FDA, and NIH, and is consolidating 28 divisions into 15 as part of the restructuring. Divisions focused on global health, HIV prevention, and injury prevention are among those being eliminated or reduced. These cuts are separate from earlier attempts to fire probationary employees at federal agencies.

Responsibilities from eliminated departments are being shifted to other parts of HHS, such as moving CDC’s Division on HIV Prevention to the Health Resources and Services Administration. However, this shift raises concerns among HIV advocates as HRSA primarily focuses on treatment rather than prevention. It is unclear if this plan is still in effect. Many of the downsized agencies at the CDC will likely fall under the leadership of Susan Monarez, Trump’s pick for the agency’s director. Earlier this month, five division leaders at the CDC resigned in preparation for these cuts.

Berkeley Lovelace Jr., a health and medical reporter for NBC News, is covering these developments, with a focus on FDA, Covid vaccines, prescription drug pricing, and health care. This story is still developing, and updates are expected.
