Wildfire in South Carolina Continues to Grow as Firefighters Work to Protect Homes

A large wildfire in the South Carolina mountains near the North Carolina state line has doubled in size over the last three days. Fire crews have been able to keep the blaze away from structures by concentrating on saving lives and property through digging fire breaks. No injuries have been reported, and firefighting efforts have included over 550 water-dropping missions on the Table Rock fire and a second blaze on Persimmon Ridge. South Carolina Forester Scott Phillips emphasized that containment is challenging due to dry fuel, low humidity, and high winds. The Table Rock and Persimmon Ridge fires have burned about 17 square miles and have been growing due to windy and dry conditions. In North Carolina, several fires have been burning in the mountains, with the largest becoming more contained. The wildfire season has been particularly busy thanks to a drought and Hurricane Helene knocking down trees, making it difficult for firefighters to access blazes. A ban on outdoor burning has been in place for over a week, and violating the ban can result in jail time and financial responsibility for any damages caused. Weather forecasts for the weekend show calmer winds and some rain, although it may not be enough to fully extinguish the fires. Gov. Henry McMaster expressed hope that rain will provide relief and asked for prayers for the situation.
