Federal agencies implement new initiative to promote voluntary resignations and encourage employees to move on

The Trump administration is offering federal workers at several agencies the opportunity to resign while staying on paid leave for several months in an effort to reduce the size of the government. At least four federal agencies, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Agriculture Department, the General Services Administration, and the Defense Department, are implementing a deferred resignation program. The program allows workers to resign now but continue to receive pay for several months. The program had previously been offered to about 75,000 federal workers, and is now being extended to more employees.

The program has specific eligibility criteria, with some positions considered critical and not eligible for the program. The Defense Department is aiming to maximize participation in order to avoid involuntary layoffs. The deadlines for workers to accept the offer vary by agency, with the Agriculture Department deadline set for April 8, the HUD deadline set for April 11, and the GSA deadline set for April 18. The program is not being dictated by the Office of Personnel Management, but is specific to each agency.

In addition to the deferred resignation program, the Health and Human Services Department is also carrying out layoffs as part of an efficiency effort led by Elon Musk. The first version of the program faced legal challenges, but ultimately was allowed to move forward. Members of the military, U.S. Postal Service employees, and certain other positions are ineligible for the program.
