Alexander Ovechkin equals Wayne Gretzky’s record for most goals in NHL history

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin scored his 894th career goal, tying NHL legend Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals scored in league history. Ovechkin netted the goal against the Chicago Blackhawks in the third period. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Ovechkin has lived up to his promise as an offensive force. In addition to tying Gretzky’s record, Ovechkin holds several other scoring records, including most power-play goals and most overtime goals. He also holds the record for the most goals scored for a single team.

Ovechkin is currently third in the NHL in goals scored this season and has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard trophies for leading the league in goals, most recently in 2020. He is a three-time NHL MVP and led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP. Despite not advancing past the first round of the playoffs since winning the Cup, the Capitals are currently first in the Eastern Conference and second in the NHL overall.

Ovechkin has been playing professionally since 2001 and is under contract with the Capitals through the 2025-26 season. His career milestone of tying Gretzky’s goal record solidifies his place as one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history, and he continues to make history with his scoring prowess.
