The University of Oklahoma’s athletic department reported a slim operating surplus of just over $300,000 for the 2023 fiscal year, according to a report obtained by The Oklahoman. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the department has posted an operating surplus below $5.2 million, a significant decrease from the surplus of more than $10 million seen in previous years.
Despite this decrease, OU’s athletic department remains one of the few in the nation that operates without receiving institutional support or student fees. The department did receive some indirect institutional support in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but otherwise, it has reported no allocated revenue from the school since 2008.
In the 2023 fiscal year, the program reported total operating revenues of $199,295,570, with notable revenue items including ticket sales, contributions, media rights, and royalties. The program also received nearly $11.8 million in conference distribution of football bowl-generated revenue.
Expenses for the department included athletic student aid, coaching salaries, team travel, and recruiting spending. Despite an increase in operating expenses to nearly $199 million, the department still reported a surplus of more than $6.5 million in “excess transfer” to the institution, its biggest number ever.
Overall, the University of Oklahoma’s athletic department continues its streak of operating surpluses, demonstrating financial stability and success within the department.
