The American Farmers and Ranchers (AFR) Cooperative has strongly opposed the closure of the Oklahoma Forestry Service, following a proposal by Governor Kevin Stitt to disband the agency. AFR stated that any efforts to diminish or disband the OFS would hinder rural fire departments’ ability to respond in critical situations, putting Oklahomans’ lives, property, and finances at risk. The organization emphasized the crucial role the OFS plays in the state’s timber industry and its economic impact, contributing around $.9 billion to the state economy and employing over 19,000 people.
Governor Stitt defended his decision by stating that the forestry division’s leadership withheld resources from firefighters during dire fire situations and failed to provide consistent and transparent information about the incident. He expressed his support for local and rural firefighters but demanded accountability and answers from the Forestry division’s leadership.
The Oklahoma Forestry Service not only plays a crucial role in wildfire prevention and response but also works to conserve the state’s forests and natural resources through pest management and reforestation efforts. AFR stressed the importance of increasing funding for the OFS rather than decreasing it.
