The Oklahoma City Council has unanimously approved a plan to provide supportive, affordable housing for veterans who have experienced homelessness. The Dorset Place facility will offer 37 rooms to veterans in need, with access to services such as medical care, food, and case management. Greg Shinn of the Oklahoma City Housing Authority is excited about the opportunity to help those who have served the country. The property, located off Northwest 122nd Street, was previously an assisted living facility, and will now offer a safe and high-quality environment for veterans to thrive in. The goal is to reduce homelessness among veterans, who made up 7% of the 1,838 people experiencing homelessness in 2024 according to city data. Residents at Dorset Place will pay no more than 30% of their income for rent, ensuring that the housing remains affordable. The VA Medical Center will determine who is eligible to stay at the facility, with residents expected to move in within 3 months. The program aims to provide a lifeline for veterans in need and garner public support for those who have served their country. If interested, veterans can contact the VA to determine their eligibility for the program.
