Congress works to prevent government shutdown; Oklahoma’s earmarks in jeopardy

Congress is working to pass a resolution to avoid a government shutdown by the upcoming Friday deadline. The proposed resolution, supported by President Trump, would fund the government through Sept. 30, increasing defense spending by $6 billion while cutting non-defense domestic spending by $13 billion. The House vote is set for Tuesday, with at least some Democratic support needed in the Senate to reach the required 60 votes.

In 2021, Congress decided to bring back earmarks, with some members in favor and others against. Earmarks, now known as Community Project Funding, allow members of Congress to direct funding to specific projects in their districts. However, in the yearlong continuing resolution proposed by Republicans this week, FY 2025 earmarks are not included. Five FY 2025 earmarks from Oklahoma members that will not be funded if the CR passes include projects such as the Hefner Water Treatment Plant, Fires Innovation Science and Technology Accelerator, and the Ottawa County Detention Center.

Overall, the resolution aims to prevent a government shutdown by funding the government through the fiscal year, with a focus on defense spending and non-defense cuts. Earmarks, while controversial, are being excluded in the upcoming resolution. The vote in the House is set for Tuesday, with attention shifting to the Senate where bipartisan support will be necessary for the bill to advance.
