Renewed funding supports joint prevention initiatives in Garvin County schools to combat opioid use

Garvin County schools are taking a proactive approach to combating Oklahoma’s opioid epidemic. Lindsay Elementary School Counselor Kassi Turner and Maysville Superintendent Shelly Hildebrand-Beach have received grants to implement education, prevention, and harm reduction measures in their districts. Turner and her husband created the PASS Prevention Coalition to make Garvin County schools drug-free, while Hildebrand-Beach is personally teaching substance abuse prevention curriculum to middle school students in Maysville. Both districts are also implementing Dynamic Influence educational programs and partnering with organizations like the Chickasaw Nation to provide resources for parents.

Turner and Hildebrand-Beach emphasize the importance of taking a proactive approach to prevention and safety, utilizing grant funds to provide resources like naloxone kits, fentanyl test strips, and lockboxes in school buildings. They are also implementing evidence-based training programs and planning to add the Botvin Life Skills course in their schools.

Both educators stress the importance of collaboration and ongoing commitment to prevention efforts, with Turner highlighting the role of school staff in ensuring the safety and well-being of students. The Garvin County schools are demonstrating a strong commitment to protecting students and fostering a healthier future for all. By working together and leveraging resources, they hope to make a significant impact in tackling the opioid epidemic in Oklahoma.
