State officials in Oklahoma are on alert following an incident at Blanchard Elementary School where a Sig Sauer P-320 handgun discharged on the playground. The McClain County Sheriff’s Office reported that a student was able to get their finger on the trigger while the gun was holstered, causing it to go off. This has raised concerns about the safety of the popular law enforcement service weapon.
Investigations have shown that there were no mechanical issues with the Blanchard School Resource Officer’s service weapon, and it was determined that the gun was not faulty. However, similar incidents have been reported in other states where the same model of gun went off without anyone touching the trigger. Manufacturer Sig Sauer has settled injury lawsuits related to these incidents, totaling over $13 million.
In response to these concerns, the Oklahoma Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) has started taking action. They have changed the policy at their training center in Ada to no longer allow firearms without an external manual safety, in order to reduce the risk of unintentional discharges.
Additionally, the Oklahoma City Police Department has replaced their Sig Sauer P320 weapons with a different platform, citing safety concerns. Other police departments have also raised questions about the safety of the P-320, leading to bans on the gun’s use in law enforcement training in states like Washington. With ongoing concerns about the safety of the Sig Sauer P-320, officials are taking steps to prevent further incidents and protect officers from harm.
