Russia and Ukraine continue airstrikes despite failed attempts at pause following departure of U.S. envoy from Moscow

At a high-level conference in Turkey, the top diplomats of Russia and Ukraine once again traded accusations of violating a U.S.-brokered deal to pause strikes on energy infrastructure, highlighting the challenges of negotiating an end to their 3-year-old war. While both countries agreed in principle to a limited, 30-day ceasefire last month, conflicting statements and immediate breaches by both sides have complicated the process. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed Ukraine had been attacking Russia since the beginning, while Ukraine’s Andrii Sybiha accused Russia of launching thousands of missiles and bombs at civilians since agreeing to the ceasefire.

Russia has been sharing intelligence with the U.S. on supposed breaches of the ceasefire by Ukraine. Ukrainian forces hold the advantage in Ukraine and have warned of a fresh spring offensive by Russia. President Donald Trump has urged Russia to move towards ending the war and called it terrible and senseless. There were discussions of a U.S.-backed agreement for safe Black Sea shipping, but it could not be implemented due to Russian restrictions.

In a tragic event, a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was lost in a Russian missile strike, with the pilot, Pavlo Ivanov, killed. This is the second F-16 lost while repelling Russian attacks, with Ukraine receiving multiple batches of fighter jets from Western allies. Meanwhile, Russian drones have killed at least two civilians in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. The situation remains tense and the path towards peace in Ukraine is fraught with challenges and ongoing conflict.
