The City of Oklahoma City is teaming up with the Central Oklahoma Storm Water Alliance to offer residents discounted rain barrels as part of a water conservation initiative. These upcycled 55-gallon barrels are available for purchase online starting at $69.50. Residents must select Oklahoma City as the “Rainbarrel Program City” during checkout to ensure their order is correctly associated with the city’s program. Various colors, composters, and accessories are also available for purchase.
Environmental Protection Superintendent Derek Johnson believes that using rain barrels is one of the most effective stormwater best practices for residential areas. Capturing rainwater can help reduce urban runoff impacts on local waterways and decrease the amount of drinking water used for lawns and gardens. The barrels are equipped with new fixtures and screens to keep critters and mosquitoes out.
Residents can place their orders online until April 28 and pick them up on May 3 or May 10 at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center on S. Portland Ave. For more information about the rain barrel program, residents can visit okc.gov/RainBarrel or call Storm Water Quality Outreach at (405) 297-1797. This initiative aims to promote water conservation and reduce the environmental impacts of urban runoff in Oklahoma City.
