A group of wandering bison recently caused a wild and airborne rescue mission at U.S. Army Garrison Fort Sill. The unexpected visitors had wandered from their home at the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, approximately 20 miles away. To help guide the bison back safely, Fort Sill’s Natural Resources team called in experts from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a helicopter crew from USDA Wildlife Services.
The operation, humorously dubbed a “bison Uber,” involved helicopters safely escorting the herd across terrain and highways back to their grazing grounds. The goal was to move the animals efficiently without causing them stress or putting anyone in harm’s way. Fortunately, the mission was successful, and all the bison were returned to the refuge unharmed.
Fort Sill officials shared the lighthearted story on Facebook, joking that even bison should stop at the Visitor Welcome Center next time they drop by. The post ended with a reminder that the unexpected visitors were safely back where they belong, grazing peacefully on the plains.
