Oklahoma legislator introduces resolution to reject proposed state social studies and science standards

Oklahoma Senator Adam Pugh has filed a joint resolution, SJR 20, to disapprove proposed updates to the state’s social studies and science standards. The resolution comes after newly elected State Board of Education members raised concerns about not having enough time to thoroughly review the standards before they were approved by the board. They also expressed issues with discrepancies in the version of the standards they voted on compared to the one they were emailed prior to the vote. The proposed standards have drawn controversy for requiring lessons on bible teachings and instructing students to identify discrepancies in the 2020 election results. State Superintendent Ryan Walters defended the standards, stating they are designed to teach students to investigate and calculate specific details surrounding elections. Additionally, the joint resolution points out a significant cost of $33 million to implement the proposed standards, including developing new curriculum and buying new textbooks. Lawmakers have instructed that copies of the resolution be sent to Gov. Stitt, the State Department of Education, and the editor of “The Oklahoma Register.” The state legislature has until May 1 to take action on the resolution before the new standards would take effect in the 2025-26 school year.
