Quarterback From Oklahoma Enters Transfer Portal

After a short stay in Norman, former Western Carolina quarterback Cole Gonzales has entered the transfer portal once again, according to reports from 247Sports and On3. Gonzales had transferred to Oklahoma earlier this offseason, committing to the program on Christmas. He was competing for the backup quarterback position behind John Mateer, along with Michael Hawkins Jr. and Jett Niu.

Before his transfer, Gonzales was a two-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the NCAA FCS Player of the Year. Last season, he threw for 2,543 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in eight games before being sidelined by a season-ending injury. In 2023, he completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,803 yards and 28 touchdowns. In 2022, he threw for 1,336 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Gonzales led Western Carolina’s offense to top rankings in passing, total first downs, and total offense in the FCS last year. However, with his entry into the transfer portal during the spring window, Gonzales will not be able to transfer within the SEC and be immediately eligible to play this fall. Despite his successful track record, Gonzales now faces the challenge of finding a new home for the upcoming season.
