Former Daycare Owner Charged After Child Found Intoxicated

Frederick, MD – Doris Marie Ott, 50, a former daycare provider in Walkersville, Maryland, has been charged with neglect of a minor and reckless endangerment after a child in her care was found with a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal driving limit. (newsweek.com)

On April 10, the child, whose identity has not been disclosed, was dropped off at Ott’s licensed daycare facility at approximately 8:30 a.m. Later that day, Ott contacted the child’s mother around 3:45 p.m., reporting that the child was having difficulty waking from a nap and appeared "pale and limp." The mother promptly took the child to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where medical staff discovered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.203%.

Investigations revealed that Ott’s daycare, operating from her Mount Pleasant Court residence, had been licensed for 18 years. Authorities found alcohol stored in a basement refrigerator near the area where children were cared for. Ott denied providing the child with alcohol, suggesting that the child might have ingested it elsewhere.

Ott’s daycare license was revoked on May 23, 2022, following a suspension in April of the same year. Her defense attorney, Michelle Martz, stated that Ott is "completely innocent" and looks forward to contesting the charges in court. The trial is scheduled to begin next month.

This incident has raised significant concerns about child safety and the responsibilities of daycare providers in Maryland.
