Oklahoma Running Back Gavin Sawchuk Enters Transfer Portal

NORMAN — Oklahoma running back Gavin Sawchuk is set to enter the transfer portal, becoming the second Sooner running back to do so during the post-spring window. This decision follows former FCS transfer Sam Franklin’s entry into the portal just a week prior.

Sawchuk, a senior from Littleton, CO, joined Oklahoma as a consensus four-star recruit, acclaimed as the top prospect from his state. He has amassed 977 career rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, highlighting a promising start before an injury-laden 2024 season limited his performance.

During his redshirt freshman year, Sawchuk emerged as a key player, leading the team with 744 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. However, last season saw a drastic decline due to injuries, totaling only 128 yards. The recent acquisition of graduate transfer Jaydn Ott has likely influenced Sawchuk’s decision, as Ott brings a wealth of experience with 1,318 rushing yards in 2023 alone.

As he partakes in the transfer journey, Sawchuk leaves behind a commendable legacy both on and off the field. He was recognized on the Danny Wuerffel Trophy watch list for his community service contributions, becoming a standout for his charitable work from Oklahoma to South Africa. His initiatives included assisting in disaster relief efforts in Hawaii and engaging with vulnerable communities worldwide.

Sawchuk’s exit marks a notable shift within DeMarco Murray’s running back unit, which still includes promising talents like Ott and Jovantae Barnes. Sawchuk is among eight Sooners who have opted to enter the transfer portal recently, a development that showcases the fluidity of college football rosters in today’s landscape.

As Sawchuk navigates his next steps, the Sooners will look to maintain their competitive edge heading into the 2025 season.
