Several LGBTQ+ pride events planned for Washington, D.C.’s World Pride celebration have been relocated from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This change affects events such as an International Pride Orchestra concert, a drag story hour, and Pride-themed art exhibits, including a display of panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The Associated Press reported that the relocations occurred after the Kennedy Center opted not to finalize contracts for hosting these events. Many organizers proactively moved their events following President Donald Trump’s controversial firing of multiple Kennedy Center Board members in February, which he announced via Truth Social, stating that the center had previously hosted “Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth.”
Ryan Bos, executive director of the Capital Pride Alliance, said Trump’s message indicated a concerning shift for the LGBTQ+ community. He emphasized that the Kennedy Center had long been a safe haven for these communities, and the president’s stance contradicts the essence of Pride. Consequently, many World Pride activities will now take place at the World Pride Welcome Center in downtown D.C., while the International Pride Orchestra concert will be held at Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland. The orchestra’s leaders received notice via email on February 12 that they could not perform at the Kennedy Center.
Michael Roest, the International Pride Orchestra’s artistic director, expressed disappointment over losing the Kennedy Center venue but appreciated Strathmore’s support. Bos affirmed the importance of continuing with World Pride activities, especially as this year marks the 50th anniversary of annual Pride celebrations in Washington, reinforcing the message of love, pride, and resilience.
