Suspect in Custody for Allegedly Stealing DHS Chief Kristi Noem’s Purse

A man is in custody in Washington, D.C., connected to the theft of Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse on Easter evening. The suspect’s identity has not been released, but authorities believe he stole Noem’s purse while she dined with her family at Capital Burger. Surveillance footage showed a masked man entering the restaurant, bypassing two Secret Service officers, and sitting next to Noem’s table. He discreetly dragged her purse closer before swiftly taking it and exiting the restaurant, again passing the Secret Service agents without being stopped.

Noem’s purse contained significant items, including $3,000 in cash, her Department of Homeland Security access badge, passport, various credit cards, blank checks, keys, and her driver’s license. The investigation is being conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the U.S. Secret Service, as Noem receives Secret Service protection due to her role. Despite the theft and ongoing investigation, both the D.C. Metropolitan Police and U.S. Attorney’s office declined to comment further.

When questioned at the White House Easter Egg Roll, Noem did not provide specific details about the incident, stating, “I don’t think I can comment on it yet. It’s not resolved yet.” Law enforcement officials are currently determining whether the thief specifically targeted Noem or if it was an opportunistic crime. As the investigation unfolds, any potential criminal charges will be released by the Department of Homeland Security according to established protocols.
