Hundreds of potential jurors in New York will complete questionnaires this week for Sean “Diddy” Combs’ upcoming sex trafficking trial, overseen by U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian. Jury selection is scheduled for next Monday, following Combs’ not guilty pleas to charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution.
Legal teams for both Combs and federal prosecutors disagreed on the content of the proposed jury questionnaires. Prosecutors criticized a lengthy 72-question survey submitted by Combs’ team, claiming it covered sensitive topics best addressed by the judge in person. Combs’ attorney argued that jurors should have the option to respond in writing. As a compromise, a checkbox was suggested for jurors to indicate their preference for discussing sensitive issues in person, though the finalized version wasn’t disclosed.
A jury of 12, plus 6 alternates, will be selected. The completed questionnaires will guide discussions on excusing jurors due to biases or hardships. Opening statements are anticipated to begin on May 12, with the trial expected to last 8 to 10 weeks. The case involves allegations that Combs coerced women into drug-fueled sexual encounters he referred to as “freak offs,” which prosecutors say he orchestrated and recorded.
Combs is also dealing with past allegations from his former girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, who accused him of abuse. A controversial video showing Combs assaulting Ventura in 2016 may be shown to jurors after Subramanian ruled it admissible, representing a setback for Combs’ defense. Ventura is expected to be a key witness against him.
