Oklahoma Governor Stitt Aims for Tax Cuts and Workforce Reductions

Stitt Unveils Tax Cut Plan and Efficiency Initiative in State of the State Address

In his recent State of the State address, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt revealed a two-pronged strategy for tax reform, encapsulated in his slogan, “A half and a path.” This includes a proposed half-point cut to both individual and business income taxes and a call for a long-term reduction towards zero income tax. The initiative finds support among Republican lawmakers, many of whom have filed measures aimed at promoting government efficiency in the spirit of the Trump administration’s fiscal policies.

To bolster this efficiency, Stitt announced the launch of "DOGE-OK," an initiative designed to streamline state agencies and reduce employee counts. The Governor stated, “I am committed to having fewer state employees at the end of my term than when I took office.” This effort aligns with similar initiatives at the federal level, aiming to cut wasteful government spending by leveraging a new unpaid Chief DOGE Advisor position, responsible for budget oversight.

On the education front, Stitt emphasized “education freedom,” advocating policies that maximize competition among schools. He pointed to a ranking by ALEC that positions Oklahoma fourth nationally in education freedom, while also supporting the establishment of a publicly funded religious school, now on hold due to legal challenges.

However, the response to Stitt’s address has been mixed. Tribal leaders expressed concern over the lack of focus on Oklahoma’s tribal nations, while Democratic lawmakers criticized the Governor for not addressing critical needs like healthcare and childcare. They warned that if the state aims to cultivate a business-friendly environment, it must also prioritize the well-being of its citizens.

Overall, Stitt’s proposals may reshape Oklahoma’s fiscal landscape, but the forthcoming budget report will be pivotal in determining the specifics of tax cuts and spending reforms.
