Mabel Bassett Correctional Center Inmates Participate in Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon
MCLOUD, Okla. — April 28, 2025 — For the first time, inmates at the Mabel Bassett Correctional Center ran in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon’s 5K, honoring the memory of those impacted by the tragic bombing on April 19, 1995. Although they could not be part of the downtown race, the women expressed their solidarity and love for Oklahoma by participating in a marathon within the facility.
This year’s marathon featured around 26,750 runners from all 50 states and 18 countries, alongside the inmates, marking a significant milestone in the event’s history. The women, many of whom were deeply affected by the bombing, expressed a strong desire to contribute to the day’s remembrance activities. One inmate reflected, “I was in eighth grade when the bombing happened… being able to support our state and let everybody know that we remember is incredibly meaningful.”
The event was met with enthusiasm, with officials indicating plans to make this participation a yearly tradition. The marathon not only serves as a tribute to the victims and survivors of the bombing but also fosters community spirit among the inmates, showcasing their resilience and connection to Oklahoma.
