Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Oklahoma City Area: Check Weather Alerts

Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Oklahoma City Area

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Norman issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 6:11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, affecting Canadian, Cleveland, Grady, McClain, and Oklahoma counties. Meteorologists predict winds reaching up to 70 mph and hail as large as 0.75 inches.

In an advisory, the NWS urged residents to seek shelter in interior rooms on the lowest floors of their homes. Radar indicated that severe thunderstorms were forming along a line stretching from near Union City to Bridge Creek and Newcastle, moving northeast at approximately 50 mph. The warning highlighted that significant damage to trees, mobile homes, and roofs is likely, particularly in areas including southwestern Oklahoma City, Norman, Moore, El Reno, and Blanchard.

A severe thunderstorm warning signifies that the region is currently experiencing or is about to encounter storms producing winds of 58 mph or higher or hail measuring one inch in diameter or more.

Residents are advised to prioritize safety during these storms by staying indoors, away from windows, and avoiding electrical equipment and plumbing. Keeping a battery-powered weather radio handy can be crucial in case of power outages. Additionally, it is recommended to bring pets inside and secure outdoor items to prevent them from becoming hazardous debris in high winds.

For continuous updates on the weather situation, residents can monitor local weather reports and follow guidance from the NWS. Reporters Jana Hayes and Victoria Reyna-Rodriguez contributed to this article, which was generated using information from the NWS and reviewed by an editor.

Stay safe, Oklahoma City!
