Oklahoma Senate Advances Sports Betting Legislation
On April 25, 2023, an Oklahoma Senate panel made significant strides towards legalizing sports betting in the state by advancing two pivotal bills. After years of unsuccessful attempts, the Senate Business and Commerce Committee approved House Bill 1047 and House Bill 1101 with votes of 8-1 and 6-3, respectively.
Sen. Bill Coleman, the author of the measures, noted that this marks the first time a Senate committee has moved forward with sports betting legislation in Oklahoma. House Bill 1047 seeks to provide the state’s Native American tribes exclusive rights to offer sports betting, establishing a framework that includes a 10% fee paid to the state. This bill would necessitate an amendment to the existing Model Tribal Gaming Compact, which currently allows tribes to have control over specific Class III gaming operations, including slots and roulette.
The advancement of these bills reflects a growing momentum for legal sports betting in Oklahoma, a topic that has gained traction among lawmakers and the public alike. The proposed legislation aims to regulate what has been an underground industry, offering a legitimate avenue for sports wagering while also generating revenue for the state.
As the legislative process unfolds, the interests of tribal nations and various stakeholders will play a crucial role in shaping the future of sports betting in Oklahoma. If passed, this legislation could transform the state’s gaming landscape, positioning Oklahoma as a competitive player in the expanding market of legal sports betting across the nation.
