Free Legal Advice Available on Law Day, May 1
Oklahoma residents in need of legal assistance can access free advice on May 1, as the Oklahoma Bar Association hosts its annual Law Day. This nationwide initiative celebrates the rule of law and emphasizes the importance of legal rights and responsibilities in a democratic society.
This year, the Oklahoma Bar Association will provide the ‘Ask a Lawyer’ hotline, allowing residents to connect directly with volunteer attorneys. These trained attorneys cover a wide range of legal fields, enabling them to offer basic advice, clarify legal issues, and point callers to valuable resources—all at no cost.
Mary Clement, co-chair of the Law Day committee, describes the hotline as a vital resource for those who struggle to afford legal counsel. “It provides an opportunity for people to discuss their legal problems without the significant financial commitment typically associated with hiring an attorney,” says Clement.
The hotline will assist with various issues including family law, landlord disputes, small claims, and basic legal rights. Callers will receive guidance on the next steps to take, and may be directed to pro bono representation or other nonprofit organizations for further assistance.
The ‘Ask a Lawyer’ hotline operates from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Law Day, with the number to call being 918-340-5297. Approximately 100 attorneys are volunteering their time to respond, and organizers anticipate over 1,000 calls throughout the day.
