Unplugged White Salvia: A Stunning New Addition to Gardening with Resilience

Press Release: Exciting Expansion of the Unplugged Salvia Family

The Unplugged group of salvias is set to grow, welcoming two new vibrant additions: Unplugged Red and the highly anticipated Unplugged White. Renowned horticulturist Norman Winter emphasizes the significance of Unplugged White, which he believes deserves special attention and appreciation.

Initially skeptical about incorporating white into his gardening palette, Winter has seen a transformation in the Unplugged White over the past year. Despite his initial indifference, he has been captivated by its resilience during the hottest summer and its impressive April bloom—deriving from the adage that perennials first "sleep," then "creep," and finally "leap." The Unplugged White has not only survived but thrived, leading the flowering charge.

This Salvia farinacea, native to Texas, Oklahoma, and Mexico, is hardy in USDA zones 7b-10 but may behave as an annual in cooler climates. Despite this, Winter insists it’s worth the investment, describing the experience of planting these salvias as a way to "unplug" from technology and immerse oneself in the joys of gardening.

Standing 14 to 24 inches tall with a modest spread, Unplugged White is perfect for various planting scenarios—whether as a thrilling centerpiece in mixed containers or alongside vibrant companions like ajuga and Lemon Coral sedum. Notably, it is deer-resistant but a magnet for bees and butterflies, enhancing garden biodiversity.

For optimal growth, Winter advises appropriate fertilization, particularly in mixed plantings needing daily watering. Soil improvement is key to establishing Unplugged White as a perennial. With its stunning appearance and adaptability, Unplugged White is poised to become a garden favorite.
