New University Programs to Propel Digitalization in Türkiye’s Higher Education
The President of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), Erol Özvar, has announced a significant initiative aimed at enhancing digitalization in Türkiye’s higher education sector during the 261st Inter-University Council Meeting. The new programs will focus on healthcare and agriculture, coinciding with the "2030 Vision for Turkish Higher Education" aims discussed in recent regional meetings.
Özvar emphasized the necessity of a strategic framework designed to amplify the global standing and competitiveness of Turkish universities. A report summarizing the outcomes of these regional discussions will be released next month, which will guide the action plan shared with institutions.
A major highlight of Özvar’s address was the expansion of AI-based programs, aiming to increase the number of universities offering such curricula to 80, including private institutions. Cybersecurity, alongside IT and AI programs, will see a rise in both associate and bachelor’s degree offerings. Özvar plans to reshape health education with new digitalized associate degree programs and ongoing development in bachelor’s offerings.
In agriculture, new educational models incorporating AI, IoT systems, and big data analytics are on the horizon. Proposals for innovative associate and bachelor’s programs will be finalized to enhance Türkiye’s agricultural output and competitiveness in the global market.
Additionally, Özvar mentioned the transformation of vocational programs in fields like machinery and construction to meet employment demands. Upcoming green and sustainable technology programs will also reflect a commitment to integrating environmentally-friendly practices into university curricula.
Moreover, he reiterated the importance of accreditation for doctoral programs and the establishment of academic units, with a target completion date set for 2027. The Sports-Friendly Campus Project, which evaluates university wellness initiatives, will announce its findings during the week of May 19.
Özvar’s ambitious plans signal a transformative approach to modernizing Turkey’s educational landscape.
