BYU Football Strengthens Defensive Line with Transfer from Oklahoma State
Brigham Young University (BYU) is set to bolster its defensive line with the recent transfer of Justin Kirkland, a former defensive tackle from Oklahoma State. The 6-foot-3, 335-pound player made the announcement via social media on Thursday, marking a significant addition to the Cougars’ roster.
Kirkland, a Utah native, showcased his skills during the 2024 season, where he played in all 12 games for the Cowboys. He wrapped up the season as the team’s third-highest rated defender, achieving a favorable Pro Football Focus grade of 70.8. His collegiate career spans three seasons, during which he accumulated impressive stats, including 72 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and three sacks.
Before his tenure at Oklahoma State, Kirkland played for Utah Tech in 2022. A dynamic presence on the field, he is expected to join forces with another seasoned transfer, Keanu Tanuvasa from Utah. This formidable duo is poised to fortify the interior defensive line, offering essential experience and skill to a youthful squad filled with underclassmen.
Kirkland’s journey began at Roy High School, where he graduated in 2020 and was a teammate of current BYU receiver Parker Kingston. Following high school, he dedicated time to a full-time mission in Hawaii, after which he entered the college football arena.
As the Cougars gear up for the upcoming season, the addition of Kirkland, alongside Tanuvasa, offers head coach Jay Hill a critical boost to the team’s defensive strategy, aiming to enhance performance on the field in the competitive landscape of college football.
