Singer Jill Sobule, famous for ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ tragically passes away in house fire

Singer Jill Sobule, renowned for her 1995 hit “I Kissed a Girl,” tragically passed away at age 66 in a house fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, on Thursday morning. Firefighters discovered her body after responding to the incident around 5:30 a.m. Sobule’s manager, John Porter, affirmed her significance as a cultural icon and human rights advocate, stating that her music is deeply embedded in our culture.

“I Kissed a Girl” made history by reaching No. 20 on Billboard’s modern rock chart, marking it as the first openly queer-themed record to achieve such success. Another popular track, “Supermodel,” featured in the “Clueless” soundtrack, further showcased her musical talent. Recently, Sobule had turned her creative focus to theater, producing a coming-of-age musical titled “F— 7th Grade,” which debuted off-Broadway in 2022 and earned a Drama Desk nomination for “outstanding musical” the following year.

Sobule was scheduled to perform in Denver at Swallow Hill on Friday, where a gathering is now planned to honor her legacy. In 2008, she became associated with Katy Perry due to Perry’s release of a song with the same title, leading to misunderstandings after Sobule made ironic comments about the situation. She expressed a mix of cynicism and acceptance regarding the business, stating she was somewhat pleased not to be defined solely by the song anymore.

Jill Sobule is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, James and Mary Ellen, along with her nephews Ian Matthew and Robert, and Robert’s wife, Irina. Her legacy in music and advocacy will continue to resonate with many.
