House Democratic Leader Launches Campaign for Oklahoma Governor

Democrat Cyndi Munson Announces 2026 Gubernatorial Bid

OKLAHOMA CITY — Cyndi Munson, the current House Minority Leader and the first Asian-American woman elected to the Oklahoma Legislature, officially announced her candidacy for governor in 2026 during a campaign event outside the state Capitol on Tuesday. The 39-year-old lawmaker, who has served in the House since 2015, plans to remain in her current role until her term concludes.

“I’ll be traveling across our beautiful state over the next year and a half, listening to what Oklahomans value and what we can improve,” Munson stated. “This campaign is about the people of Oklahoma, and their voices will guide my vision as your next governor.” Munson filed official paperwork with the Oklahoma Ethics Commission the previous day.

While Munson is currently the sole Democrat vying for the governorship, she faces competition from several Republicans, including Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, former House Speaker Charles McCall, and other notable figures. Current Governor Kevin Stitt, a Republican, is ineligible to run again due to term limits.

Munson emphasized her experience as a working-class candidate, stating, “I know what it’s like to pay student loans and live within a budget. I’m not from a wealthy background and I’m not beholden to any political party.” She highlighted her commitment to bipartisanship and her mission to tackle the everyday challenges faced by Oklahomans.

As she embarks on her campaign, Munson remains focused on bridging the political divide and advocating for the needs of ordinary citizens throughout the state. With a strong track record of collaboration and a grounded understanding of local issues, Munson aims to differentiate herself from typical candidates on the political scene.
