An elderly female cat named Mirage was found alive after surviving a nearly 400-foot fall at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, where her owners, Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailee Crane, 58, were tragically killed. The bodies of the couple were discovered on April 29, about 380 feet below Inspiration Point, where it is believed they fell while attempting to cross over a railing. Preliminary investigations have yet to determine the exact cause of the fall, but the sheriff’s office indicated they had been living out of a U-Haul and had traveled to Utah after spending considerable time in Arizona; their last known address was in Florida.
Mirage was discovered in a mud-covered carrier upon her rescue and arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with fractured ribs and matted fur. Despite her injuries, she has been responding positively to care, eating and drinking on her own. The sanctuary affirmed that within the steady attention from their veterinary team, she is expected to make a full recovery. Judah Battista, the chief sanctuary officer, expressed amazement at the cat’s survival, noting her sweet demeanor.
