Oklahoma City: Tensions Rise Over Educational Nomination

State Senator Lisa Standridge of Norman is standing firmly against the nomination of Michael Tinney, an experienced oil/gas and probate attorney, to the state Education Board. Her decision stems from her frustrations with Governor Kevin Stitt, who nominated Tinney after ousting former member Kendra Wesson for perceived alignment with Superintendent Ryan Walters’ policies.

Standridge has expressed her belief that Wesson was unfairly dismissed, stating, “I just don’t feel like she was treated fairly.” In a response to her stance, Tinney remarked that the blockade on his nomination “doesn’t seem right,” noting custom dictates that a home-town Senator should support gubernatorial nominees. He added that it feels like Standridge is holding up the progress of the state due to “some personal reason, whether it’s just a personal grudge or something against the governor.”

Governor Stitt’s decisions in appointing Tinney alongside Chris VanDehende and Ryan Deatherage have drawn scrutiny. Standridge defended her block, suggesting that replacing Wesson, a member of the Caddo Nation, with another Norman resident adds insult to injury.

Senate Pro Tempore Lonnie Paxton indicated that the decision ultimately lies with Standridge, despite earlier impressions that the nomination would be supported. “If a senator does not want their constituents to serve, that’s their purview,” Pugh noted, confirming her prerogative.

The saga continues to unfold, highlighting the complexities of political alliances and the impact of personal grievances on state governance. As the situation develops, both sides remain firm in their positions, with broader implications for the educational policies in Oklahoma.
