Recent research published in Frontiers in Evolution and Ecology reveals that wild chimpanzees engage in self-medication and care for others, which may provide insights into the origins of human medical practices. Chimpanzees were observed chewing plants and applying them to their wounds, cleaning the wounds of others, and using leaves for hygiene after defecation.
This research challenges the notion that only humans are capable of altruism; instances where chimpanzees assisted non-kin reveal that prosocial behaviors may not be unique to our species.
