Severe Storms Sweep Across Oklahoma: Tornado Watch Issued
Oklahoma is on high alert as severe storms persist across the state, prompting a tornado watch for central and eastern regions. Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane reports one confirmed tornado so far, mainly affecting areas around Allen and Atwood.
By Monday evening, storms were moving toward Pontotoc and Hughes counties, with the tornado watch officially expiring for central Oklahoma. However, significant weather threats—including large hail and damaging winds—remained, particularly for southern and eastern areas.
Earlier in the day, severe thunderstorms unleashed ping pong ball-sized hail in Logan County and golf ball-sized hail near Stillwater. Lightning struck a police unit in Newcastle, reminding residents of the dangers posed by severe storms. Authorities emphasized safety precautions, urging people to seek shelter indoors.
As the storms developed, warnings were issued for numerous counties, including Atoka, Coal, and Hughes, forecasting hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. The risk level for tornadoes was notably high leading into the afternoon, coinciding with possible baseball-sized hail.
With a level 4 moderate risk designated for central and eastern Oklahoma, local schools and colleges began canceling activities. The University of Oklahoma and the University of Central Oklahoma closed campuses in anticipation of severe weather.
Meteorologists expect storms to impact the OKC metro between 3-6 p.m., with broader storms moving eastward across the state into the evening.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay informed and prioritize safety as they navigate the severe weather conditions. For continuous updates, viewers can tune into the KOCO weather channel or use their mobile app for alerts.
