Former Basketball Player Jarred Shaw Arrested in Indonesia for Drug Smuggling
Jakarta, Indonesia — Jarred Shaw, a former basketball player for Oklahoma State and Utah State, has been arrested in Indonesia on charges of drug smuggling. The 34-year-old athlete was detained on May 7 after police discovered 132 pieces of cannabis-infused candy at his apartment, following a tip from customs officials regarding a suspicious package he allegedly received from Thailand.
Shaw, who has played for various teams in the Indonesian League since 2022, including the Tangerang Hawks, now faces severe consequences under Indonesia’s strict drug laws. If convicted, Shaw could face the death penalty — a fate that has befallen some drug traffickers in the region. Police Chief Ronald Sipayung stated that Shaw’s potential penalties include a life sentence or death by firing squad.
Indonesian authorities highlight that, unlike Thailand, which decriminalized cannabis in late 2022, Indonesia maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. In light of his arrest, Shaw has been released from his position at the Tangerang Hawks and banned for life from the Indonesian Basketball League.
Shaw, once rated as a four-star prospect in high school basketball, started his collegiate career at Oklahoma State before transferring to Utah State, where he became a starting center. Despite earning accolades such as a spot on the WAC All-Newcomer Team, Shaw faced off-court issues, including a felony charge for drug distribution while at Utah State, leading to a brief jail sentence and probation.
Following his college career, Shaw was undrafted in 2014 and embarked on a professional basketball journey that took him to various countries, including Turkey, Africa, and Japan. This recent arrest marks a significant and troubling turn in his life.
