Gardening in the Heat: Tips for Thriving in Summer
As summer approaches, Florida’s gardeners are gearing up for the challenging heat and humidity. Remarkably, many plants can flourish even under extreme temperatures, including zinnias, sunflowers, King’s Mantle, and Crinums, which bloom beautifully in the sweltering heat.
Zinnias, while requiring seed cultivation, are a great option as they germinate quickly in moist soil and bloom until frost. Though they require full sun, if your garden has shady spots, the resilient Wishbone Flower (torenia) is an excellent alternative, thriving in various colors and reseeding easily.
Summer favorites like Crinum and Canna lilies also stand out as robust performers. Sweet alyssum, if nurtured, can thrive through changing weather, attracting beneficial pollinators with its new hardy hybrids.
Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’ is another standout, known for its delicate flowers and compact variants, ideal for container arrangements despite needing winter protection. For those wanting vivid colors, the Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia) comes in tall and dwarf varieties, showcasing bright orange flowers that entice butterflies.
Gardeners are reminded of the importance of tree care during these hot months, as established trees provide crucial shade. Proper watering, especially for deeper-rooted trees, can help lower indoor cooling costs.
While gardening, personal safety is paramount. The heat poses serious risks, so it’s advised to garden early or late in the day, stay hydrated, and use protective gear. Innovative cooling tools, like neck fans and specially designed hats, can combat heat efficiently.
Becky Wern, a Master Gardener Volunteer, emphasizes that it’s vital to pace yourself to avoid heat-related health risks. For inquiries, the Duval County Extension Office is available for support from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. Stay safe and enjoy your summer gardening!
