Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cucumbers Grows to 18 States, Involving 45 Cases of Illness

A salmonella outbreak linked to a Florida cucumber producer has sickened 45 individuals across 18 states, prompting warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and affected retailers, including Target and Walmart, to dispose of recalled products. The outbreak has been traced to cucumbers from Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, with patients reported in states from Alabama to Virginia. Of those affected, 16 have been hospitalized, but no fatalities have occurred.

The FDA’s investigation has focused on the salmonella montevideo strain, although multiple additional strains were found in samples from Bedner’s Pennsylvania facility, potentially complicating the situation. The agency is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to analyze these strains and ascertain any connections to other outbreaks, including one from last spring.

Retailers were initially alerted about potentially tainted cucumbers from Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market in Florida, but the list of affected sellers has expanded. Products recalled include ready-to-eat items like Boar’s Head Greek-style chicken salad and various sushi products under the Mai brand. The cucumbers responsible for the outbreak were sold between April 29 and May 19.

Salmonella bacteria can contaminate produce through contaminated animal feces, and those particularly vulnerable, including the elderly and immunocompromised individuals, face the risk of severe illness. Symptoms can manifest within six hours to six days post-exposure, including stomach cramps, diarrhea, and nausea. As a significant cause of foodborne illnesses and related hospitalizations globally, ongoing investigations aim to ensure public health safety.
