Charred Remains Discovered in Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park

Authorities discovered the badly burned body of a young man in Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park on Saturday, prompting an investigation led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The body was encountered by a hiker around 8:18 a.m. in an area off the main walking trail, approximately 100 yards from a tower for the Summit Skyride. Although the location is not remote, it is not frequently hiked, making the discovery unusual.

Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety spokesperson John Bankhead noted that those who have worked in the park for years have never encountered such a situation. An autopsy was scheduled for the following Monday at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office, and authorities have a potential identity for the victim based on personal belongings and a vehicle found nearby, though this has yet to be confirmed.

The fire associated with the body has also attracted the attention of arson investigators from the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department. Stone Mountain Park, which features attractions like a lakeside resort and a controversial Confederate sculpture, is managed by a state authority and an amusement park contractor. The mountain is located about 20 miles east of Atlanta and is noted for its large high-relief sculpture depicting Confederate figures, a controversial feature that has sparked demonstrations over the years.

The investigation continues as authorities seek more information about the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
