In the 1989 sequel to “Back to the Future,” the iconic Cherry Red Gibson ES-345 guitar used by Marty McFly during a pivotal high school dance remains missing. As the film approaches its 40th anniversary, Gibson is reaching out to the public for help in recovering the legendary instrument, which has not been located since its disappearance during the filming. The company, based in Nashville, is also producing a documentary titled “Lost to the Future,” chronicling their search for the guitar and exploring the film’s legacy.
To promote the search, Gibson has released a video featuring familiar faces from the movie, including Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly), Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown), Lea Thompson, and Harry Waters Jr. In a tongue-in-cheek plea, Lloyd’s Doc Brown humorously notes that the guitar is “lost to the future,” while Fox suggests it may be “somewhere lost in the space-time continuum” or even in a “Teamster’s garage.” The video also includes a surprise appearance by Huey Lewis, whose band provided the film’s memorable soundtrack, particularly the hit song “The Power of Love.”
In the movie, McFly performs at the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance, playing “Earth Angel” and later rocking out to “Johnny B. Goode,” showcasing his guitar skills. Fox aimed to incorporate styles from legendary guitarists like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen into McFly’s performance. As McFly’s riffs become increasingly elaborate, he jokes, “I guess you guys aren’t ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it,” capturing the film’s playful spirit and cultural impact.
