Severe Storms Strike Oklahoma: Tornadoes, Hail, and High Winds Expected
Oklahoma City, OK – As severe storms sweep through Oklahoma this Sunday afternoon, residents are bracing for the possibility of tornadoes, large hail, and wind gusts exceeding 100 mph. Weather warnings issued by the National Weather Service indicate heightened risks across various counties.
At 4:05 p.m., a severe thunderstorm watch was expanded to cover multiple counties, including Garfield, Grant, and Kay, lasting until 9 p.m. A separate severe thunderstorm watch for Beckham and Caddo counties extends until 11 p.m. The storms pose significant threats, primarily including 70 mph wind gusts and half-dollar sized hail in affected areas like Enid and Ponca City.
Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane from KOCO 5 noted that the severe weather is likely to intensify as storms develop in the Texas Panhandle and track southeastward. By 9 p.m., storms are expected to reach the Oklahoma City metro, coinciding with events like Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
The outline of storm risks includes a level 4 threat for southwestern Oklahoma, with cities such as Altus and Lawton facing high wind potential. A level 3 risk zone encompasses much of central Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma City area, where gusts of 70–80 mph are anticipated.
Officials are urging residents to remain alert, particularly as isolated storm cells could merge into a more potent squall line by late afternoon. Radar forecasts show initial severe storm development around 1:30 p.m., with a strong chance of additional hazardous weather through the evening.
Amid the storm preparations, Amtrak services on the Heartland Flyer have been disrupted. The railway will not operate its evening and next-morning routes due to safety concerns.
Oklahoma residents are encouraged to download the KOCO 5 App for real-time weather alerts and updates as the situation unfolds.
